mingle for missions

You are the salt of the earth. But what good is salt if it has lost its flavor? Can you make it salty again? It will be thrown out and trampled underfoot as worthless. You are the light of the world—like a city on a hilltop that cannot be hidden. No one lights a lamp and then puts it under a basket. Instead, a lamp is placed on a stand, where it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father.

– matthew 5.13-16

one of the first lessons Jesus taught his disciples is that they were to be salt and light – that their reason for being his followers in the first place was to bring spice and light into bland and dark places.

those of us who know God, and what God has done for us, know how spicy and bright life can be. but not all people do.

there are those with whom our lives intersect every day, who live in a dark place. who have a bland existence. unfortunately, they often don’t even know it. not until, that is, they meet us. until they see in us a living relationship with God.

and there are those who live far away, in the remote areas of the world, places some of us may never visit. there too, there are people to whom we are called to bring spice and light.

every spring, Threshold provides all of us with a great opportunity to be salt and light – both to our everyday friends and acquaintances as well as people on other continents.

it’s an event called MINGLE FOR MISSIONS, and if you are part of the Threshold family, i want you to attend if at all possible. (if you aren’t, you are still welcome to join us!).

mingle for missions is a party. a backyard party with food, drink, friends, a band, and a silent auction.

three reasons why you need to be there…

1. since we don’t own a building as a church, we don’t get together socially as often as we would like. this is the premiere social event of the spring semester for us as a church. it gives us a long evening to hang out, get to know one another, and meet new people. that alone is good reason to attend.

2. the focus of the event is to raise money for missions. we are intentionally reaching out to transform a town of about 15,000 people in central costa rica. we are also involved in some church planting efforts in europe. and each summer, we help repair homes in southeastern kentucky, in the 20th poorest county in america. our team has been working tirelessly at bringing in high-quality items for the silent auction. you can pick up some great stuff, and every dollar goes toward our mission efforts – being salt and light to the world.

3. being salt and light to people we see regularly can sometimes be a bit awkward. we invite people to church, but they decline because church is boring or irrelevant. or we don’t invite them because we don’t want to seem too ‘religious.’ this event is the perfect setting to allow those friends or co-workers to see you and your church family in a relaxed setting. they can meet other Christ-followers and see how ‘normal’ we are. next thing you know, they’re asking you if they can come to church on sunday! you have injected spice and light into their lives, and all you did was invite them to a party. are you kidding me? evangelism is that easy??? cool, huh?

so here are the details. really do hope to see you there!
