there’ll be a blue moon tonight.
it only happens about once every two and a half years – two full moons in one month.
the next is slated for august 2012.
and it hasn’t happened on new year’s eve since 1990.
the phrase, “once in a blue moon” is used for the absurd or unlikely, for something that rarely or never happens; and if it is gonna happen, you’re gonna have to wait for it. maybe for a long time.
sometimes, when i pray, it seems like my prayer ends up on a stack on God’s desk, titled: “in a blue moon.” know what i mean?
2009 was a year of waiting for me, maybe for you. not for my ship to come in or to win the lottery. my waiting was on God, and for a good bit of the time, he seemed to be taking his dear sweet time. on a few issues, he still does. maybe he’s waiting on a blue moon. if so, tonight’s the night for him to show up and end my waiting.
but somehow, as i look forward to tonight, to ringing out another year, with all its pains and disappointments, and to ringing in a new one complete with new hopes and dreams and a full moon, i know that there is no guarantee that those hopes and dreams will be fulfilled this year. i may have to go on waiting…
it’s a good thing, then, that waiting on God is a major theme in the scriptures. for example…
but you must not forget this one thing, dear friends: a day is like a thousand years to the Lord, and a thousand years is like a day. (2 peter 3.8)
for you, a thousand years are as a passing day, as brief as a few night hours. (psalm 90.4)
wait for the Lord; be strong, and let your heart take courage; wait for the Lord! (psalm 27.14)
therefore the Lord waits to be gracious to you, and therefore he exalts himself to show mercy to you. for the Lord is a God of justice; blessed are those who wait for him. (isaiah 30.18)
with each passing year, i come to a greater understanding of God’s top priority, and how everything He does, and everything He asks of us, is to fulfill this priority. that top priority is this: His Own Glory. God acts in history and in our lives for the display of his own glory. God asks us to trust him in all things… for his own glory.
and sometimes God makes us wait – sometimes painfully and almost hopelessly… for his own glory.
i have finally learned to trust in this, and to actually find joy in it! as we round the corner on 2010, it is my great hope that you will learn to trust in it as well.
tonight, as you look at the full moon – the blue moon – say a prayer for 2010, that God will meet you in your deepest longings… and that until He does, you will wait patiently on Him.
it isn’t easy. it isn’t natural. it does take focus on God’s Word, and it takes prayer. but it can happen.
though it might take another blue moon…
